NYC: Let’s Build a Smart Holiday City with urbacraft and littleBits!

Join us for a Sunday afternoon hands-on family workshop bringing architecture, toys, and electronics together!

Using Urbacraft’s City Crafting System – also known as the “hacker’s Lego”, you can build roads, towers, and contraptions of all kinds and bring them to life with littleBits! A 6-foot tall skyscraper with a moving elevator? A motion-triggered parking garage? Blinking street lights or Times Square? Done.

Please come build with us with your own ideas (all themes welcome) and let’s make a whole interactive city together – it’s a fun and productive way to spend a Sunday afternoon! The workshop will be lead by architect and urban designer, Ayssar Arida (co-founder of urbacraft), and the littleBits Store team, so there will be lots of STE(A)M learning opportunities while having fun.

Come build your city with urbacraft! It’s a new educational toy for all ages, born in Beirut and designed specifically to create and learn about
cities. It’s a building set with the hackability of digital games and the physicality of traditional toys.
During the workshop, you will become an urban designer for the day, starting by making your own room, then your house, growing to the scale of the street, and the city. With urbacraft, you build structures with plastic bits, then add to them façades representing different architectures and styles, kits of street furniture and lights, trees and landscaping, toy cars and people and stories and anything you want to bring them to life. You can even make your own pieces!

urbacraft is a new educational toy for all ages, designed specifically to create and learn about cities. It’s a building set with the hackability of digital games and the physicality of traditional toys.

Families will collaborate to create a small city together with urbacraft – they will become urban designers for the day, starting by making their own room, then their house, growing to the scale of the street, and the city. They will learn how their neighbourhoods are made of living cells, and about their role in making their city come to life.

urbacraft: Ayssar Arida and Sabine de Maussion are the co-founders of urbacraft City Crafting System a toy start-up created in 2014 in Beirut. Ayssar is an urbatect, thinker, and design entrepreneur. He runsURBATECTURE urban design thinking from Beirut and London, consulting on culture, education, urbanism and design. Sabine de Maussion is a PhD candidate in Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths College in London and a lecturer in the Masters of Curating and Art Criticism at USJ Beirut.
